MINUTES OF PROCEEDING

Tuesday, November 4, 1997

The Standing Committee on Finance met in televised session at 6:11 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Jim Jones, Gary Pillitteri, Karen Redman, Paul Szabo and Tony Valeri.

Acting Members present: Diane Ablonczy for Dick Harris; Rob Anders for Monte Solberg, Paul Crête for Yvan Loubier; Roy Cullen for Paddy Torsney.

Other Member present: Lorne Nystrom.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Richard Domingue, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association: Rick Miller, Chair, Pension Committee; Sean McManus, Canadian Director, International Association of Fire Fighters; Dale Kinnear, Labour Analyst, Canadian Police Association. From the Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Don McIver, Chief Economist, Sun Life Insurance Company Canada. From the Canadian Tax Foundation: David Perry, Senior Research Associate. From the Canadian Institute of Actuaries: Normand Gendron, FCIA, Vice-President, Council of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries; Christopher S. Moore, FCIA, Past President.

The Committee resumed its examination of Bill C-2, An Act to establish the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and to amend the Canada Pension Plan and the Old Age Security and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 28, Meeting No. 30).

Sean McManus made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 6:43 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:45 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 7:30 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.
