The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Salon A of the Fairmont Newfoundland Hotel in St-John’s, Newfoundland , the Chair, Jean Augustine, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, George S. Baker, Aileen Carroll

Acting Members present: Yves Rocheleau for Francine Lalonde, Peter Stoffer for Svend Robinson.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador: Jack Harris, MHA, Leader; Randy Collins, MHA.  From the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students Union: Chris Vatcher, Vice-president. From The Lantern: Emma Rooney, Representative; Fay Edmonds, Representative. From the St. John's Mobilization for Global Justice: Matthew Cook, Sean Reany, Lori Heath and Edward Hudson, Members. From Oxfam Canada:  Linda Ross, Canadian Program Coordinator.  From the Canadian Association of African Studies: Christopher Youé, President. From the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour: Elaine Price, President;  Nancy Shortall, Canadian Labour Congress Representative.  From the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters - Newfoundland and Labrador Branch: Sean McCarthy, Vice-president.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the North American Integration and Canada's Role in the Light of New Security Challenges and the study of the Agenda of the 2002 G8 Summit (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Meeting no. 31).

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 11:52 a.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 1:28 p.m. the sitting resumed.

At 3:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
