MINUTES OF PROCEEDING

Wednesday, October 29, 1997

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 6:16 o’clock p.m., this day, in room Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mark Assad, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Dick Harris, David Iftody, Jim Jones, Karen Redman, Monte Solberg, Paul Szabo, Paddy Torsney and Valeri.

Acting Members present: Diane Ablonczy for Dick Harris; John McKay for Gary Pilliteri; Paul Crête for Yvan Loubier.

Associate Member present: Lorne Nystrom.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Richard Domingue and Marion Wrobel,, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Finance: Susan Peterson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch; Bob Hamilton, Assistant Deputy Minister (Investment); Paul-Henri Lapointe, Assistant Deputy Minister (Fiscal & Economic Policy; Réal Bouchard, Director, Social Policy Division; Bill Mitchell, Director, Financial Markets Division; Hal Hanes, Chief, Income Security Section; Charles Seeto, Senior Chief, Financial Markets Division, Department of Finance. The Committee commenced its examination of Bill C-2, An Act to establish the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and to amend the Canada Pension Plan and the Old Age Security Act and to make consequential amendments to others Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, October 28, 1997, Meeting No. 30.).

Susan Peterson made a statement and with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 9:15 o’clock a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
