Meeting No. 15

Wednesday, February 19, 2003

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Acting Chair, Philip Mayfield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Odina Desrochers, John Finlay, Paul Forseth, Roger Gaudet, Gerald Keddy, Steve Mahoney, Philip Mayfield, Val Meredith, Shawn Murphy and Tony Tirabassi.

Acting Member present: Peter Stoffer for Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal, Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; John O'Brien, Principal; Kevin Potter, Director, Audit Operations Branch. From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Jean-Claude Bouchard, Associate Deputy Minister; Ursula Menke, Deputy Commissioner, CCG; Jacques Lorquet, Director, Navigation Systems.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee commenced consideration of Chapter 2 (Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Contributing to Safe and Efficient Marine Navigation) of the December 2002 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of an Acting Chair.

On motion of Steve Mahoney, it was agreed, - That Philip Mayfield be elected Acting Chair.

Sheila Fraser and Jean-Claude Bouchard made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
