Meeting No. 34

THURSDAY, April 2, 1998

The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:21 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Claude Drouin, Reed Elley, Grant Hill, Lynn Myers, Maurice Vellacott, Joseph Volpe, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Members present: Ivan Grose for Rose-Marie Ur and John Richardson for Dan McTeague.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Nancy Miller-Chenier and Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of natural health products. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, November 20, 1997.)

Witnesses: From the Canadian Chiropractic Association: Dr. David Peterson, President; Dr. James P. Meschino, Chiropractic expert on nutrition and wellness; Costa Papadopoulos, Manager of Professional Affairs & Health Policy. As an individual: John Apse, Barrister & Sollicitor, Trade Mark Agent. By Teleconference: From Halifax, Nova Scotia: From Citizens for Choice in Health Care: Margaret D’Arcy, President; Nancy Smithers, Owner, Naturally Nova Scotia; Mark Taylor, Nova Scotia Herbalist Association.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:08 a.m., by unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee discussed its future business.

At 12:20 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
