Meeting No. 25

Thursday, May 8, 2003

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, David Pratt, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Bill Blaikie, Dominic LeBlanc, Joe McGuire, Louis Plamondon, David Pratt, David Price, Elsie Wayne.

Acting Member present: Roy Bailey for Rob Anders.

In attendance: Barry Hamilton, Consultant.

Appearing: Hon. Rey Pagtakhan, Minister of Veterans Affairs.

Witnesses: From the Department of Veterans Affairs: Brian Ferguson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Veterans Services; LCol Brian Sutherland, Canadian Forces Liaison Officer. From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: John Nikita, Director, Occupational Health and Safety, Human Resources Programs.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference dated Monday, April 28, 2003, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-31, An Act to amend the Pension Act and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Superannuation Act.

The Minister made a statement and with the witnesses answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to Clause-by-Clause consideration of the Bill.

Clauses 1 to 7 carried.

The Title carried.

The Bill carried.

ORDERED, -- That the Chair report Bill C-31, without amendment, to the House as the First Report of the Committee.

At 9:52 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
