The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, France Bonsant, Patrick Brown, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Ruby Dhalla, Yves Lessard, Gary Merasty, Michael Savage, Mario Silva and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Denise Savoie for Tony Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Hon. Geoff Regan, P.C., M.P., Halifax West. Canadian Federation of Students: Amanda Aziz, National Chairperson. As an individual: Scott Gorry, student.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, November 22, 2006, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-284, An Act to amend the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act (Canada access grants).
 

The Hon. Geoff Regan made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:23 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

The other witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Michael Savage moved, — That the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities call upon departmental officials to provide evidence on the Canada Summer Jobs Program, including but not limited to, the status of exact funding, and that those officials be called upon to appear on an emergency basis on or before May 31st, 2007.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the motion of Michael Savage be allowed to stand until the next meeting.

 

At 5:37 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
