The Subcommittee on Public Safety and National Security of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met in a televised session at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Paul Zed, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Joe Comartin, Serge Ménard, Kevin Sorenson and Paul Zed.

 

Acting Members present: Derek Lee for Tom Wappel and John Maloney for Roy Cullen .

 

Other Members present: Hon. Don Boudria.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Arab Federation: Omar Alghabra, President. Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations: Riad Saloojee, Executive Director. Canadian Islamic Congress: Faisal Joseph, Legal Counsel. Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association: Ziyaad Mia. B'nai Brith Canada: David Matas, Lead Counsel. Canadian Jewish Congress: Mark Freiman, Honorary Counsel, Ontario Region. Muslim Council of Montreal: Salam Elmenyawi, Chairman.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of November 22, 2004, the Subcommittee resumed its study of the Anti-terrorism Act, Impact of the Anti-terrorism Act on Communities.
 

Ziyaad Mia and Faisal Joseph made opening statements and, with Omar Alghabra and Riad Saloojee, answered questions.

 

At 10:52 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:04 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark Freiman, Salam Elmenyawi and David Matas made opening statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:28 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
