The Subcommittee on Public Safety and National Security of the Standing Committee on Justice, Human Rights, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness met in a televised session at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Paul Zed, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Joe Comartin, Roy Cullen, Peter MacKay, Serge Ménard, Kevin Sorenson, Tom Wappel and Paul Zed.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Robin MacKay, Analyst; Philip Rosen, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness.

 

Witnesses: Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness: Alain Jolicoeur, President, Canada Border Services Agency; Denis Lefebvre, Executive Vice-President, Canada Border Services Agency; Bill Pentney, Assistant Deputy Attorney General; Daniel Jean, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, December 13, 2004, the Subcommittee commenced consideration of Bill C-26, An Act to establish the Canada Border Services Agency.
 

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:58 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 
It was agreed, - That in relation to the Subcommittee’s consideration of Bill C-26, An Act to establish the Canada Border Services Agency, representatives of the Canada Employment and Immigration Union be invited to appear at the meeting of February 9, 2005 and that members have until Friday, February 4, 2005 to notify the Chair of other witnesses wishing to appear in relation to the Bill.

It was agreed, - That in relation to the Subcommittee’s review of the Anti-terrorism Act, a list of potential witnesses, including all those who have indicated a desire to appear to date, be circulated to members.

 

At 5:37 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
