The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Stockwell Day, Helena Guergis, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Hon. Dan McTeague, Pierre A. Paquette, Bernard Patry, Beth Phinney and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Leon Benoit for Ted Menzies and Peter Goldring for Ted Menzies.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Bonnie Charron, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Carleton University: Andrew Cohen, Professor, School of Journalism and Communication. As an Individual: André Laliberté, Professor, Université du Québec à Montréal. Canadian Chamber of Commerce: Michael Murphy, Senior Vice-President, Policy; Darrel Houlahan, Policy Analyst, Policy.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Maurizio Bevilacqua, it was agreed, — That Bernard Patry be elected Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Maurizio Bevilacqua, it was agreed, — That Kevin Sorenson, be elected as first Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Pierre A. Paquette, it was agreed, — That Francine Lalonde be elected as second Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 
By unanimous consent, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on June 20, 2005, the Committee resumed its review of issues related to the subject matter of Bill C-357, Taiwan Relations Act.
 
Michael Murphy, Andrew Cohen and André Laliberté made statements and, with Darrel Houlahan, answered questions.
 

At 1:06 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
