The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Stockwell Day, Helena Guergis, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Alexa McDonough, Hon. Dan McTeague, Ted Menzies, Pierre A. Paquette, Bernard Patry, Beth Phinney and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: James Bezan for Ted Menzies and Peter Julian for Alexa McDonough.

 

Associate Members present: Navdeep Bains.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal; James Lee, Analyst; Marcus Pistor, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jim Peterson, Minister of International Trade.

 

Witnesses: Department of International Trade: Robert Fonberg, Deputy Minister; Randle Wilson, Director General, Strategic Trade Policy Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 20, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of the International Policy Review.
 

Jim Peterson made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 10:07 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:13 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee study in detail the International Policy Statement tabled in the House on April 19, 2005.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee adopt the revised study plan dated June 1, 2005.

 

At 10:44 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:45 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite to appear as soon as possible, Evi Zain, coordinator of the human rights organization KRONTRAS-Aceh, Jess Agustin, Asia Program Officer for Development and Peace, and Nancy Slamet, from Kairos in order for them to report on the current situation in post-tsunami Aceh, draw a portrait of current humanitarian aid to the victims and to testify on the importance of international support for the continuation and reinforcement of the peace process, support that is essential for the reconstruction of the region.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee consider for appearance as witnesses on the International Policy Statement only those names of individuals and organizations that have already been circulated.

 

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
