Tuesday, June 13, 2000
The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 9:09 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Peter Adams, presiding.
Member(s) of the Committee present: Peter Adams, Bonnie Brown, Paul Crête, Libby Davies, Raymonde Folco, Judi Longfield, Larry McCormick, Judy Sgro and Bryon Wilfert.
Acting Member(s) present: John Williams for Maurice Vellacott.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr and Bill Young, Research Officer.
Witness(es): From the Association of Canadian Community Colleges: Gerald Brown, President. From the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada: Robert Best, Director, Government Relations and Public Affairs. From the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations: Mark Kissel, National Director. From the Canadian Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators: Judy Stymest, Board member. From the Canadian Association of University Teachers: David Robinson, Director of Public Policy & Communications. From the Canadian Federation of Students - National Graduate Council: Michael Conlon, National Chairperson. From the Canadian Graduate Council: Brad Wuetherick, Chair. From the Department of Human Resources Development Canada: Thomas Townsend, Director General, Learning and Literacy Directorate; David Good, Assistant Deputy Minister, Human Resources Investment Branch. From the Financial Arrangements Working Group: J.T.S. (Tom) Lumsden, National Manager, Education Financing, Personal & Commercial Banking, Royal Bank Financial Group. From the National Association of Career Colleges: Paul Kitchin, Executive Director. From the National Education Association of Disabled Students: Frank Smith, National Coordinator.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study on Canada Student Loans: Current Situation and Future Possibilities.
David Good, Gerald Brown, Robert Best, Mark Kissel, Judy Stymest, David Robinson, Michael Conlon, Brad Wuetherick, Tom Lumsden, Paul Kitchin and Frank Smith made a statement and with the other witness answered questions.
It was agreed, -- That the Committee authorize the Chair to write to the Minister of Human Resources Development, to raise the concerns that were expressed today.
At 12:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
