The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in camera at 10:12 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Mark Muise, Alex Shepherd, Bryon Wilfert.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson and Terrence Thomas, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Allan Clarke, Director, Publishing Policy and Programs; Annie Carruthers, Publishing. From Statistics Canada: Brad Ruth, Assistant Director, Culture, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics; David Coish, Manager, Book Publishing, Culture, Tourism and the Centre for Education Statistics. From the Canada Council of the Arts: Gordon Platt, Head, Writing and Publishing Section; Keith Kelly, Director, Public Affairs, Research and Communications. From the Canadian Booksellers Association: Sheryl McKean, Executive Director. From the Book and Periodical Council: Kim McArthur, Chair. From the Simon Fraser University: Dr. Rowland Lorimer, Director, Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing. From the Centennial College: Dr. Don Sedgwick, Publishing Program.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

David Black and Kevin Burns made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:24 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:57 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 1:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
