Meeting No. 19

Thursday, March 30, 2000

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:20 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Irwin Cotler, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Dennis Mills, Mark Muise, Alex Shepherd.

Acting Members present: Dan McTeague for Paul Bonwick; Susan Whelan for Sarmite Bulte.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Competition Bureau: André Lafond, Deputy Commissioner of Competition; Chris Busuttil, Acting Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

André Lafond made an opening statement and with Chris Busuttil answered questions.

At 12:50 p.m., by unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to sit "in camera".

By unannimous consent, the Committee agreed to suspend the requirement for 48 hours notice for substantive motions.

It was agreed,-That the Committee invite book publishers at an "in camera" meeting and that the Competition Bureau also be invited.

At 12:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
