MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 24

Tuesday, May 9, 2000

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Alex Shepherd and Caroline St-Hilaire.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Michael Wernick, Assistant Deputy Minister, Cultural Development; Allan Clarke, Director, Publishing Policy and Programs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the Committee proceed to consider its future business.

It was agreed, - That the Committee retain the services of a consultant on secondment from the Department of Canadian Heritage; and

- That the Clerk prepare terms of reference for the said consultant for approval by the Committee.

It was agreed, - That the Committee seek information for the Secretary of State on Multiculturalism and Status of Women on the topic of the Status of Women in light of the proposed motion by Caroline St-Hilaire regarding the creation of a Sub-Committee.

It was agreed, - That the President and Chief Executive Officer of CBC be invited before the Committee within the next two weeks.

The Committee reverted to its order of the day.

Michael Wernick made an opening statement and, with Allan Clark, answered questions.

At 12:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
