Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, December 12, 2016, the Committee resumed its study of the Oceans Act’s marine protected areas.

Rashid Sumaila, Sally Leys and Paul Crowley made statements and, with Sigrid Kuehnemund, answered questions.

Motion

James Bezan moved, — That the Committee continue to sit in public.

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 8; NAYS: 0.

At 10:22 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:26 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four members of the Committee to review the issues surrounding closures to the Canadian Coast Guard Stations in Gimli and Selkirk, Manitoba, and Kenora, Ontario, and cuts to the Salmonid Enhancement Program.

Motion

James Bezan moved, — That the Committee hold a briefing with the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans on the issues surrounding closures to Canadian Coast Guard stations in Gimli and Selkirk, Manitoba, and Kenora, Ontario, in addition to cuts made to the search and rescue dive program in British Columbia and cuts to the Salmonid Enhancement Program.

Amendment

Mel Arnold moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “briefing” the following: “, consisting of a series of meetings”.

The question was put on the amendment of Mel Arnold and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 5.
