The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, James Bezan, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, David Kilgour, Larry Miller, Denise Poirier-Rivard, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

Acting Members present: Bev Desjarlais for Charlie Angus.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Padova, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Western Grain Elevator Association: Jean-Marc Ruest, Assistant Vice-President, Legal and Industry Affairs, James Richardson International; Richard Wansbutter, Vice-President, Commercial Relations, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool; Bill James, Director, Transportation and Logistics, Agricore United. Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association: Cherilyn Jolly, President; Douglas Campbell, Vice-President. Farmer Rail Car Coalition: Jim Robbins, Vice-President and Chair; Douglas Richardson, Legal Counsel, McKercher, McKercher & Whitmore; Bernie Churko, President, Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Grain Transportation: The Hopper Car Fleet.
 

At 11:10 a.m., Jean-Marc Ruest, Cherilyn Jolly and Douglas Campbell made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:15 p.m., Jim Robbins made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, on motion of Bev Desjarlais, it was agreed, — That the Canadian Wheat Board appear as a witness before the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food as part of the Committee's consideration of Grain Transportation: The Hopper Car Fleet .

 

On motion of Wayne Easter, it was agreed, — That pursuant to the study undertaken by the Standing Committee on Agriculture & Agri-food of the federal government’s hopper car fleet, the committee call before it officials from Transport Canada to speak to issue and to the proposals placed before the department by parties interested in acquiring the hopper car fleet and that the Committee undertake to call before it representatives of the Canadian Wheat Board to address the view and position of the Canadian Wheat Board with respect to the future of the federal government’s hopper car fleet .

 

At 1:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
