The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, the Vice-Chair, Gerry Ritz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Wayne Easter, Roger Gaudet, Larry Miller, Denise Poirier-Rivard and Gerry Ritz.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Don Boudria for Paul Steckle, Diane Finley for David L. Anderson and Kevin Sorenson for James Bezan.

 

Associate Members present: Rick Casson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Alberta Beef Producers: Arno Doerksen, Past Chairman. Alberta Cattle Feeders' Association: Kee Jim, Veterinarian, Feedlot Health Management Services. CropLife Canada: Denise Dewar, Executive Director, Plant Biotechnology.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, December 10, 2004, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-27, An Act to regulate and prohibit certain activities related to food and other products to which the Acts under the administration of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency apply and to provide for the administration and enforcement of those Acts and to amend other Acts in consequence.
 

Arno Doerksen, Kee Jim and Denise Dewar made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That all amendments to Bill C-27 be circulated to Committee members and CFIA officials on Monday, May 2, 2005.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee study Bill C-40 on Wednesdays, May 4, 11 and 18, 2005.

 

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
