Meeting No. 25

Thursday, March 27, 2003

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:04 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Andy Burton, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel.

Acting Member present:  Karen Redman for Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté and Alan Nixon, research officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Shipowners Association: Réjean Lanteigne, Vice-President, Operations. From the Shipping Federation of Canada: Anjuna Langevin, Director, Navigation and Environment.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on invasive species (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, January 30, 2003, Meeting No. 11).

The witnesses made statements.

At 11:14 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

Tom Wappel presented the Third Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which was as follows:

“Your Subcommittee recommends that the Committee adopt the following programme:

“That the Committee hear from representatives from the Area 12 snow crab industry in early April;

“That the Committee consider draft reports on invasive species and on the management of the Fraser River fishery after the Easter recess;

“That, the Committee travel to Belgium, the United Kingdom, Norway and Iceland from June 16 to 27, 2003 in relation to its studies on the Canadian Coast Guard and custodial management;

“That the Committee travel to Australia from October 27 to November 7, 2003 in relation to its study of the Canadian Coast Guard.”

It was agreed,—That the Third Report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be concurred in.

At 11:16 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public.

The witnesses made further statements and answered questions.

At 12:07 p.m., Jean-Yves Roy took the Chair.

At 12:10 p.m., Tom Wappel took the Chair.

At 12:43 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
