Meeting No. 12

Tuesday, February 4, 2003

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Andy Burton, John Cummins, R. John Efford, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel, Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: François Côté and Alan Nixon, research officers.

Witnesses: From the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union-CAW - West Coast: John Radosevic, President. From the Aboriginal Fishing Vessel Owners of British Columbia.: Gord Wasden, President. From the Area G West Coast Trollers Association: Kathy Scarfo, President. From the Coastal Community Network: Cheryl Wilson, Executive Director. From the Native Brotherhood of British Columbia.: Chief Chris Cook, President; From the Native Fishing Association:  Chief Edwin Newman, Chairman.  From the Kwakiutl Territorial Fisheries Commission:  Chief Charlie Williams, President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study on the management of the B.C. salmon fishery.  (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, January 30, 2003, Meeting No. 11).

The witnesses made presentations.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Marine Communications and Traffic Services (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, November 7, 2002, Meeting No 2).

At 12:18 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the management of the B.C. salmon fishery.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 1:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
