Meeting No. 72

Tuesday, May 21, 2002

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Bernard Bigras, Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gary Lunn, Karen Redman, Julian Reed, Andy Savoy, Hélène Scherrer, Alan Tonks.

Acting Member present: Peter Adams for Rick Laliberté.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Tim Williams, analysts.

Witnesses: From the University of Guelph: Vernon Thomas, Department of Zoology. From Trent University: Magda Havas, Environmental & Resource Studies.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider Lead Sinkers and Lead Shot and the Biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic energy.

Vernon Thomas and Magda Havas made opening statements and answered questions.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider a motion to travel to Washington, D.C.

On motion of Roy Bailey, it was agreed - That the Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development be authorized to travel to Washington, D.C. from June 5 to 11, 2002 in relation to a conference to be presented by the International Society for Ecosystem Health on the linkages between biodiversity, ecosystem health and human health and that a budget in the amount of $23,754.00 be adopted for that purpose.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
