Meeting No. 21

Wednesday, May 9, 2001

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, John Herron, Gar Knutson, Bob Mills, Karen Redman, Andy Savoy.

Acting Member present: Leon Benoit for James Moore.

Associate Member present: Rick Casson.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Monique Hébert and Tim Williams, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Cattlemen's Association: Jim Turner, Co-Chair, CCA Environment/Animal Care Committee; Hugh Lynch-Staunton, Member, CCA Environment Committee. From the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association: Garth Routledge, President. From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: Bob Friesen, President. From the Western Stock Growers' Association: David Pope, Vice-President; Norman Ward, Past-President. From the Alberta Grazing Lease Holder Association: Jack Horner, President; Tim Andrew, Treasurer. From the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association: Ted Menzies, President; Denise Treslan, Executive Director.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 20, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-5, An Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, March 22, 2001, Meeting No. 6).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
