Thursday, April 25, 2002

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Karen Kraft Sloan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Joe Comartin, Karen Kraft Sloan, Gary Lunn, Karen Redman, Julian Reed, Alan Tonks.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, research officer; Tim Williams, research officer.

Witnesses: From Confederacy of Mainland Micmacs: Michael Cox. From the Assembly of First Nations: Matthew Coon Come, National Chief; Lawrence Ignace, Advisor. From the Nicola Tribal Association: David Walkem, Registered Professional Forester. From the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada: Jose Kusugak, President; Jamie Kneen, Technical Advisor; Natan Obed, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, June 4, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, December 4, 2001, Meeting No. 56).

Michael Cox, Matthew Coon Come, David Walkem, Jose Kusugak and Natan Obed made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:18 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
