Meeting No. 61

Tuesday, February 19, 2002

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Bernard Bigras, Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, John Herron, Karen Kraft Sloan, Rick Laliberte, Bob Mills, Karen Redman, Julian Reed, Hélène Scherrer, Alan Tonks.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Tim Williams, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Banff Environmental Action and Research Society: Ed Whittingham, Director. From the Canadian Nature Federation: Lara Ellis, Wildlands Campaign. From Mining Watch Canada: Joan Kuyek, National Coordinator. From the Sierra Club of Canada: Elizabeth May, Executive Director.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, June 4, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, December 4, 2001, Meeting No. 56).

The witnesses made opening statements.

On motion of Bob Mills, it was agreed, - That the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development seek authority to travel to Vancouver, British Columbia, from March 12 to 16, 2002 in relation to an upcoming conference presented by Globe 2002 entitled “Globalizing Business … World Marketplace for Environmental Solutions”.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
