Meeting No. 14

Friday, November 19, 1999

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 1:13 p.m. this day, in Vancouver, BC, Crowne Plaza Hotel Georgia, the Chair, Sue Barnes, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Sue Barnes, John Finlay, Jim Gouk, David Iftody, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gerald Keddy, John O'Reilly.

Acting Members present: Val Meredith for Derrek Konrad; Paul Forseth for Mike Scott; Libby Davies for Louise Hardy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley; Tonina Simeone, Research Officers. From the House of Commons Committees and Legislative Services Directorate: Richard Dupuis, Legislative Clerk.

Witnesses: From B.C. Hydro & Power Authority: Brian Smith, Chair. From the Vancouver Board of Trade: Win Stothert, Chairman, Stothert Group Inc. From HSBC Asset Management Canada Ltd.: Milton Wong, Vice President. From the Canadian National Railway: David MacLean, Chairman. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Ken Georgetti, President; John Shields, Past President, BC Government and Service Employees Union. From the British Columbia Federation of Labour: Jim Sinclair, President; Angela Schira, Secretary Treasurer.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, November 1st, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-9, An Act to give effect to the Nisga'a Final Agreement (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, November 3, 1999, Meeting No. 3).

The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.

Brian Smith, Winston Stothert, Milton Wong and David McLean made statements and answered questions.

At 3:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Jim Sinclair, Ken Georgetti and John Shields made statements and with Angela Schira answered questions.

At 4:48 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
