Meeting No. 22

Tuesday, May 2, 2000

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Sue Barnes, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Sue Barnes, John Finlay, David Iftody, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Derrek Konrad.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Tonina Simeone, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada: Bob Watts, Assistant Deputy Minister, Lands and Trust Services; Ray Hatfield, A/Director General, Registration, Revenues and Band Governance Branch, Lands and Trust Services; Al Broughton, Senior Counsel, Lands, Trust and Corporate Services, Legal Services Branch.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session on the Indian Act.

Bob Watts made an opening statement and with Al Broughton and Roy Hatfield, answered questions.

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
