The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hélène Laverdière, Romeo Saganash and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: John Carmichael for Nina Grewal.

 

Associate Members present: Ray Boughen and John Carmichael.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development: Duane McMullen, Director General, Trade Commissioner Service Operations and Trade Strategy; Peter MacArthur, Director General , South, Southeast Asia and Oceania Bureau; Jeff Nankivell, Director General, Development, Asia Pacific. Fairtrade Canada: Tom Smith, Executive Director. Loblaw Companies Limited: Bob Chant, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Communication. Retail Council of Canada: Diane J. Brisebois, President and Chief Executive Officer; Heather Mak, Manager.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of Corporate Practices by Companies Supplying and Manufacturing Products in Developing Countries for Canadian Consumers.
 

Duane McMullen and Peter MacArthur each made a statement and, with Jeff Nankivell, answered questions.

 

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Tom Smith, Bob Chant and Diane J. Brisebois, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, each made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
