The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Romeo Saganash and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

Acting Members present: James Bezan for Nina Grewal and Jack Harris for Hélène Laverdière.

Associate Members present: Cheryl Gallant and Hon. Deepak Obhrai.

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst ; Brian Hermon, Analyst . House of Commons: Evelyn Lukyniuk, Procedural Clerk.

Appearing: Hon. John Baird, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs; Hon. Rob Nicholson, P.C., M.P., Minister of National Defence.

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development: Andrew P.W. Bennett, Ambassador, Office of Religious Freedom; Peter Boehm, Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Department of National Defence: Gen Thomas J. Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff.

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceed to a briefing on deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel to Iraq.

The Hon. Rob Nicholson, the Hon. John Baird and Andrew P.W. Bennett made statements and, with Gen Thomas J. Lawson, answered questions.

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
