The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, Dean Allison, David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hélène Laverdière, Laurin Liu, Romeo Saganash and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: Ed Komarnicki for Nina Grewal.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; James Lee, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development: Mark Gwozdecky, Director General, Middle East and Maghreb Bureau; Sabine Nolke, Director General, Non-Proliferation and Security Threat Reduction Bureau; Stephen Salewicz, Director, Humanitarian Assistance Division.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of the situation in Syria.
 

Mark Gwozdecky, Stephen Salewicz and Sabine Nolke made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:37 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:40 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee resume its study on the Organization of American States (OAS) and Canada's Engagement in the Americas started in the previous session and, that the evidence and documentation received by the Committee during the 1st session of the 41st Parliament on the subject be taken into consideration by the Committee in this session.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, December 5 , 2013, the Committee commenced its study of the Organization of American States (OAS) and Canada's Engagement in the Americas.
 

It was agreed, — That the draft report , as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: "The Organization of American States: Strengthening the Foundation of Canada’s Multilateral Engagement in the Americas".

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee invite the Ambassador of Religious Freedom to appear after the winter adjournment.

 

At 4:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
