Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the subcommittee on Tuesday. October 27, 2020, the subcommittee resumed its study of the role of the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise

Penelope Simons made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:27 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:36 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

The subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to committee business.

It was agreed, — That in relation to the subcommittee’s upcoming briefing on the Human Rights Situation in Hong Kong, the Clerk insert the following paragraph in invitations to potential witnesses:

On March 27, 2021, sanctions were imposed by the People’s Republic of China, prohibiting Chinese citizens and institutions from having exchanges with the Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development. These sanctions have no legal basis in Canada, and it is unclear how they could be enforced in other jurisdictions.

It was agreed, — That the following witnesses: Alliance Canada Hong Kong, Joey Siu, Hong Kong Watch, and Albert Chan be invited to appear in relation to the Subcommittee’s briefing on the Human Rights Situation in Hong Kong.

It was agreed, — That members submit any remaining witness suggestions for briefings on the human rights situations in the Philippines, Columbia, and Turkey and Northern Syria by 3:00 pm on Friday April 16, 2021.

At 9:03 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
