The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:14 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva, David Sweet and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee hearings be televised.

 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee report to the House a recommendation that the Canadian government take a strong position with the government of China and urge the international community to put pressure on the Chinese government to observe international human rights’ standards and to demand that the democratic rights of Tibetans be safeguarded and that the Chinese government immediately release the following Tibetan political detainees:

• Jigme Gyatso (monk)

• Norzin Wangmo (layperson)

• Sangye Lhamo (nun)

• Tsewang Kando (nun)

• Tsering Tsomo (nun)

• Yeshi Lhadon (nun)

• Phurbu Tsering Rinpoche (senior lama)

• Kunchok (16 year old protestor)

• Dondrub Wangchen (filmmaker)

• Tenzin Delek Rinpoche (monk)

• Runggye Adak (herder).

 

At 1:59 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
