The Subcommittee on International Human Rights of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 1:04 p.m. this day, in Room 213, Wellington Building, the Chair, Scott Reid, presiding.

 

Members of the Subcommittee present: Hon. Irwin Cotler, Russ Hiebert, Wayne Marston, Scott Reid, Mario Silva, David Sweet and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; Melissa Radford, Analyst.

 
The Subcommittee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Subcommittee business.
 

It was agreed, — That whereas, as a motion was tabled before the Subcommittee on May 12, 2009, calling for a study of human rights commissions; and

Whereas, Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act has been read down by the Canadian Human Rights tribunal; and

Whereas the Justice Committee subsequently has slated meetings on October 1 and 6 to review the situation relative to this court ruling;

Be it resolved that the Subcommittee on International Human Rights cease its study of Human Rights Commissions; and

Be it further resolved that the Clerk of the Subcommittee pass all testimony and/or evidence gathered by the Subcommittee on Human Rights Commissions on to the Justice Committee.

 

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee invite officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and seven other witnesses to appear in relation to its study on the human rights situation in Iran.

 

At 2:01 p.m., the Subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
