Meeting No. 25

Tuesday, March 31, 1998

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:32 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 705, La Promenade, the Vice-Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Bonnie Brown, Brenda Chamberlain, Dale Johnston, Bob Nault and Byron Wilfert.

Acting Member present: Yves Rocheleau for Paul Crête.

Associate Member present: Pat Martin.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Bill Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association: David Church, Director, Transportation Recycling & Purchasing; Robert Elder, Manager, Transportation, Weldwood of Canada Limited. From "Conseil du Patronat du Québec": Me Sylvie Graton, Lawyer. From "La Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec": Denis Courteau, Vice-President of the FTQ (Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec)/Regional Director for Quebec; Émile Vallée, Political Adviser, Jean-Pierre Néron, Legal Adviser.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part 1) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, March 24, 1998, Meeting No. 19).

David Church and Robert Elder made a statement and answered questions.

Sylvie Graton made a statement and answered question.

Denis Croteau, Émile Vallée and Jean-Pierre Néron made a statement and answered questions.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, -That the clerk be authorized to distribute to all members of the committee all amendments received for Bill C-19.

At 5:11 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
