The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Randall Garrison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Rosane Doré Lefebvre, Hon. Wayne Easter, Randall Garrison, Roxanne James, Larry Maguire, Rick Norlock, LaVar Payne, Blake Richards and Jean Rousseau.

 

Acting Members present: Dan Albas for Daryl Kramp.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tanya Dupuis, Analyst; Christine Morris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime: Sue O'Sullivan, Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime. House of Commons: David Sweet, Ancaster—Dundas—Flamborough—Westdale.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, December 10, 2013, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-479, An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (fairness for victims).
 

Roxanne James moved, — That the meeting be televised.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 3:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:39 p.m., the sitting resumed in a televised session.

 

David Sweet made a statement and answered questions.

 

Roxanne James moved, — That the Committee proceed to sit in camera during the last five minutes of the meeting.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Dan Albas, Rosane Doré Lefebvre, Roxanne James, Larry Maguire, Rick Norlock, LaVar Payne, Blake Richards, Jean Rousseau — 8; NAYS: Wayne Easter — 1.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Sue O'Sullivan made a statement and answered questions.

 

Pursuant to motion adopted by the Committee earlier this day, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 

At 5:22 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:24 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed, — That, in relation to Bill C-479, An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (fairness for victims), clause-by-clause consideration of the Bill begin on Thursday, February 27, 2014.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
