The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 268, La Promenade Building, the Vice-Chair, Jinny Jogindera Sims, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Scott Armstrong, Alexandre Boulerice, Brad Butt, Rodger Cuzner, Joe Daniel, Sadia Groguhé, Colin Mayes, Cathy McLeod, Devinder Shory, Jinny Jogindera Sims and Jonathan Tremblay.

 

Acting Members present: Ben Lobb for Phil McColeman.

 

Other Members present: Jean Crowder.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Isabelle Lafontaine-Émond, Research Assistant.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Allan Clarke, Director General, Policy and Coordination Branch, Lands and Economic Development Sector; Sheilagh Murphy, Director General, Social Policy and Programs Branch; Chris Rainer, Director, Strategic Policy and Planning Directorate. Department of Human Resources and Skills Development: James Sutherland, Director General, Aboriginal Affairs Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the Committee commenced its study of opportunities for aboriginal persons in the workforce.
 

James Sutherland, Sheilagh Murphy and Allan Clarke made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:26 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:26 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure, which read as follows, be concurred in:

Your Subcommittee met on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, to consider the business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

1. That, in relation to the study of opportunities for Aboriginal persons in the workforce, at least six (6) meetings be scheduled to hear from witnesses, while recognizing that business referred to the Committee by the House will take precedence in scheduling over this study;

2. That, in relation to the study of opportunities for Aboriginal persons in the workforce, the Committee travel to northern Alberta, northern British Columbia and Vancouver Island in winter/spring 2014, and that the necessary staff accompany the Committee;

3. That, in relation to the study of opportunities for Aboriginal persons in the workforce, the Committee travel to northern Québec in winter/spring 2014, and that the necessary staff accompany the Committee.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
