The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room 228, The Valour Building, the Chair, Hélène LeBlanc, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stella Ambler, Niki Ashton, John Barlow, Kirsty Duncan, Hélène LeBlanc, Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Djaouida Sellah, Susan Truppe and Wai Young.

 

Acting Members present: Bob Zimmer for Joan Crockatt.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association: Beba Svigir, Chief Executive Officer; Rekha Gadhia, Manager, Family Services Department. DisAbled Women's Network of Canada: Carmela Hutchison, President; Bonnie L. Brayton, National Executive Director. Canadian Council of Muslim Women: Alia Hogben, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 30, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of promising practices to prevent violence against women.
 

Beba Svigir and Rekha Gadhia, by videoconference from Calgary, Alberta, Carmela Hutchison and Alia Hogben made statements and, with Bonnie L. Brayton, answered questions.

 

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $33,500, for the study of promising practices to prevent violence against women, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That, in regard to the study of promising practices to prevent violence against women and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, October 30, 2014, each party send a list of five (5) additional witnesses to the Clerk no later than Friday, December 5, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
