The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in a televised session at 8:46 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Dona Cadman, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Paule Brunelle for Nicole Demers.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Statistics Canada: Rosemary Bender, Assistant Chief Statistician, Social, Health and Labour Statistics; Jane Badets, Director General, Census Subject Matter, Social and Demographic Statistics; Marc Hamel, Director General, Census Management Office. Status of Women Canada: Sébastien Goupil, Executive Director, Gender-Based Analysis and Strategic Policy Branch; Erin Leigh, Senior Policy Analyst, Gender-Based Analysis and Strategic Policy Branch. As an individual: Ivan P. Fellegi, Former Chief Statistician of Canada, Statistics Canada. Association féminine d'éducation et d'action sociale: Céline Duval, President; Madeleine Bourget, Vice-President. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the Committee commenced its study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women's equality in Canada.
 

Jane Badets and Sébastien Goupil made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 9:44 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:47 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Ivan P. Fellegi, Céline Duval, Robin Jackson and Samantha Spady made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

At 10:42 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:43 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That in relation to the study of the cancellation of the mandatory long form census and its impact on women’s quality in Canada, the proposed budget in the amount of $ 24,750, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee immediately invite representatives from Status of Women Canada and the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) to appear before the Committee in order to give an update on the funding for Sisters in Spirit.

 

At 10:54 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
