The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met in a televised session at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Cathy McLeod, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Lois Brown, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Cathy McLeod, Hon. Anita Neville and Michelle Simson.

 

Acting Members present: Roger Gaudet for Luc Desnoyers and Yasmin Ratansi for Hon. Hedy Fry.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Havi Echenberg, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Equal Pay Coalition of Ontario: Mary Cornish, Chair. Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada: Gisèle Pageau, Human Rights Director. Federally Regulated Employers - Transportation and Communications (FETCO): John Farrell, Executive Director; Barbara Gagné, Representative, Manager, Labour Relations and Classification for NAV CANADA. Opus Mundi Canada: Paul Durber, Senior Consultant. Statistics Canada: Marie Drolet, Research Economist, Income Statistics Division; Sylvie Michaud, Director General, Education, Labour and Income Statistics Branch.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 5, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-471, An Act respecting the implementation of the recommendations of the Pay Equity Task Force and amending another Act in consequence.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:26 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:29 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Nicole Demers moved, — That the Committee support all the claims from the World March of Women 2010 in Quebec, addressed to the Government of Canada:

- That the National Assembly of Quebec call on the Canadian Government to recognize that water is a fundamental right that must be excluded from NAFTA;

- That the Government of Canada guarantee the inalienable right of women to decide whether to have children, which entails the maintenance and consolidation of free abortion services offered by public and community networks and the development of new public services in under-served areas;

- That the Government of Canada immediately withdraw its troops from Afghanistan;

- That Canada sign the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and implement the rights contained therein, with particular attention to the rights of Aboriginal women and children; and

That it congratulate the organizers of this event, and that a report be made to the House.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 3; NAYS: 7.

 

At 10:34 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
