The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met by videoconference at 6:14 p.m. this day, in Room 7-52, 131 Queen St., the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Olivia Chow, Hon. Denis Coderre, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Thierry St-Cyr, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, David Tilson, Alice Wong and Terence Young.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Peter Showler, Professor, Human Rights Research and Education Centre, University of Ottawa; Raoul Boulakia, Lawyer; Lorne Waldman, Immigration Lawyer; Michael Greene, Immigration Lawyer. Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, April 29, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Federal Courts Act.
 

Peter Showler, and Raoul Boulakia and Lorne Waldman by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, made statements and answered questions.

 

At 7:02 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 7:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Vanessa Taylor, Andrew Brouwer and Salvatore Sorrento, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, made statements and, with Ibrahim Abu-Zinid, also by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, answered questions.

 

At 7:40 p.m., Maurizio Bevilacqua took the Chair.

 

At 8:06 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:11 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Catherine Dagenais, Geraldine Sodoway, by videoconference from Toronto, Ontario, and Michael Greene, by videoconference from Calgary, Alberta, made statements and answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That, notwithstanding the motion adopted Tuesday, May 4, the Committee hear evidence on Tuesday, May 25, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, May 27, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m., and on Monday, May 31, from 6 to 9 p.m.

 

At 9:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
