The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Hon. Denis Coderre, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Thierry St-Cyr, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, Alice Wong and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Carol Hughes for Olivia Chow.

 

Associate Members present: David Christopherson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Centre des Femmes Interculturel Claire: Micheline Cantave, Director; Michel Nemours. Hamilton Haitian Association: Bernard DuBois, Vice-President; John Abrams, Member. Help Services for Newcomers and Immigrants Inc.: Serge Bien Aimé, Senior Immigration Counsellor; Keder Hyppolite, Executive Director. Regroupement des Femmes Haïtiennes de la Montérégie: Josette Jacques. National Council of Citizens of Haitian Origin: Joseph Jean-Gilles, Member, Immigration Work Committee and General Director of GAP-VIES. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a follow-up of the briefing by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration on its role in the Government of Canada's response to the earthquake in Haiti.
 

Bernard DuBois, Joseph Jean-Gilles and Jean-Baptiste Sauveur made statements and, with John Abrams, answered questions.

 

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:42 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Micheline Cantave, Keder Hyppolite, Serge Bien Aimé and Josette Jacques made statements and, with Michel Nemours, answered questions.

 

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
