The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in camera at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Paul Calandra, Hon. Denis Coderre, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Thierry St-Cyr, Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, David Tilson, Alice Wong and Terence Young.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Marlene Jennings for Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua and Irene Mathyssen for Olivia Chow.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daphne Keevil Harrold, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Claudette Deschênes, Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations; Sandra Harder, Acting Director General, Immigration.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Chair presented the First Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

In accordance with its mandate pursuant to Order made March 3, 2010, your Subcommittee has considered the question of the future business of the Committee.

The Subcommittee recommends that the Committee undertake the following work:

on March 23 and 25, consideration of a draft report on best practices in settlement services;

on March 30, hear departmental officials on immigration application wait times;

on April 1, debate motions under Committee business; and

from April 13 to 27, continue the study of immigration application wait times.

 

It was agreed, — That the report of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be concurred in.

 

It was agreed, — That the Swedish Delegation be invited on April 20, 2010 to appear.

 

At 3:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 3:44 p.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee resumed consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2009-2010: Votes 1c and 5c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION referred to the Committee on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report Votes 1c and 5c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION to the House.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration on its role in the Government of Canada's response to the earthquake in Haiti.
 

Claudette Deschênes made a statement and, with Sandra Harder, answered questions.

 

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
