The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Don Davies, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Maria Mourani, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant, Brent Rathgeber and Blake Richards.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tanya Dupuis, Analyst; Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale: Yves Dufour, Director General; Frédérick Laberge, Director, Biology and Administration; Diane Séguin, Deputy Director. Centre of Forensic Sciences: Jonathan Newman, Deputy Director; Raymond Prime, Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and Section 13 of the DNA Identification Act, the Committee resumed a statutory review of the Act.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:44 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That instructions be given to the Analysts on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 for the reports on the statutory review of the DNA Identification Act and on the statutory review of the Sex Offender Information Registry Act.

 

It was agreed, — That instructions be given to the Analysts on Thursday, May 14, 2009 for the report on the review of the findings and recommendations of the Internal Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in relation to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin (Iacobucci Inquiry) and the report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar (Arar Inquiry).

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee consider the draft reports on the statutory review of the DNA Identification Act and on the statutory review of the Sex Offender Information Registry Act during the week of June 2, 2009.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a study of Federal Corrections: mental health and addiction, and hear witnesses on this subject on May 26 and 28, 2009.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That Don Davies be elected Second Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
