The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Jack Harris, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Maria Mourani, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant, Brent Rathgeber and Blake Richards.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Tanya Dupuis, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Royal Canadian Mounted Police: William J.S. Elliott, Commissioner; Darrell Madill, Deputy Commissioner, Community, Contract and Aboriginal Policing Services.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee commenced a study of the Taser.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:50 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:52 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That during the week of February 23, 2009, hearings be held on the review of the DNA Identification Act.

 

It was agreed, — That during the week of March 2, 2009, hearings be held on the report from the Internal Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in relation to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin (Iacobucci Inquiry) and the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar (Arar Inquiry).

 

It was agreed, — That during the week of March 9, 2009, hearings be held on security issues surrounding the Canada/United States border.

 

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
