The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 213, Wellington Building, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Don Davies, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant, Brent Rathgeber and Blake Richards.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Vincent for Maria Mourani.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Tanya Dupuis, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Jennifer Stoddart, Privacy Commissioner of Canada; Carman Baggaley, Strategic Policy Advisor, Legal Services and Policy Branch; Chantal Bernier, Assistant Privacy Commissioner. As an individual: Paul Cavalluzzo, Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, the Committee resumed a review of the Findings and Recommendations of the Internal Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin (Iacobucci Inquiry) and the report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar (Arar Inquiry).
 

Jennifer Stoddart and Paul Cavalluzzo made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee travel to Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick from Sunday, June 14, 2009 to Friday, June 19, 2009 in relation to its study on Federal corrections: mental health and addiction and adopt a travel budget request in the amount of $ 95,091 to this end.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear witnesses on Bill S-2, an Act to amend the Customs Act, on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 and proceed to the clause by clause consideration of the Bill on Thursday, June 11, 2009.

 

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
