The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met in a televised session at 9:01 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Jack Harris, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Serge Ménard, Maria Mourani, Rick Norlock, Robert Oliphant, Brent Rathgeber and Blake Richards.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Tanya Dupuis, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Peter Van Loan, Minister of Public Safety.

 

Witnesses: National Parole Board: Mario Dion, Chairperson. Correctional Service Canada: Marc-Arthur Hyppolite, Senior Deputy Commissioner. Canadian Security Intelligence Service: Jim Judd, Director. Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness: Myles Kirvan, Associate Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister's Office. Canada Border Services Agency: Stephen Rigby, President. Royal Canadian Mounted Police: William Sweeney, Senior Deputy Commissioner.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2009-2010: Vote 30 under PRIVY COUNCIL and Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 under PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 26, 2009.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
