The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met in a televised session at 2:20 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mike Allen, David Anderson, Hon. Navdeep Bains, Leon Benoit, Paule Brunelle, Nathan Cullen, Russ Hiebert, Hon. Geoff Regan, Devinder Shory and Alan Tonks.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Brad Trost, Brian Jean for Russ Hiebert, Peter Julian for Nathan Cullen and Luc Malo for France Bonsant.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst; Mohamed Zakzouk, Analyst. House of Commons: Jean-François Lafleur, Procedural Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Society of Professional Engineers and Associates: Michael Ivanco, Vice-President. International Society of Nuclear Medicine: Robert Atcher, Past President. As an individual: Sandy McEwan, Special Advisor on Medical Isotopes to the Minister of Health. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited: Hugh MacDiarmid, President and Chief Executive Officer; Bill Pilkington, Senior Vice-President and Chief Nuclear Officer. Department of Natural Resources: Serge Dupont, Special Advisor to the Minister of Natural Resources on Nuclear Energy Policy; Tom Wallace, Director General, Electricity Resources Branch. Government of Ontario: David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the Atomic Energy Canada Limited facility at Chalk River and the status of the production of medical isotopes.
 

Michael Ivanco, Robert Atcher and Sandy McEwan made statements and answered questions.

 

At 3:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:18 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Hugh MacDiarmid made a statement and, with Bill Pilkington, answered questions.

 

At 4:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:08 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Serge Dupont made a statement and, with Tom Wallace, answered questions.

 

Geoff Regan moved, — That the Committee resume its study no later than next Friday to hear from Dr. Urbain, Dr. Dridger, Dr. O'brien and Dr. Lamoureux on the impacts they are seeing as front-line doctors today.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived.

 

At 5:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

David Caplan made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
