The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Roger Gaudet for France Bonsant and Merv C. Tweed for Brian Storseth.

 

Associate Members present: Malcolm Allen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst. House of Commons: Jean-François Lafleur, Procedural Clerk.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food adopt a budget in the amount of $ 15,400 for its study on the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee send a letter to Minister Stockwell Day on the increasing protectionist measures imposed by the Russian Federation, particularly harmful in the area of agriculture equipment.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the order made Thursday, February 12, 2009, the Committee commenced its study of food safety.
 

The Committee commenced consideration of a draft report.

 

It was agreed, — That the draft report be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the report be entitled: “ Beyond the listeriosis crisis: Strengthening the food safety system“.

 

It was agreed, — That fifty (50) copies of the report be printed in accordance with the policy established by the Board of Internal Economy.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair, Clerk and analyst be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes as may be necessary without changing the substance of the report.

 

It was agreed, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 109, the Committee request that the Government table a comprehensive response to the report.

 

It was agreed, — That the Chair present the report to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee append to its report a dissenting opinion from the Conservative Party provided that it is no longer than the report and submitted electronically to the Clerk of the Committee, no later than June 17, 2009.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the draft report on the competitiveness of Canadian agriculture be prepared no later than June 26, 2009 and be held by the Clerk.

 

At 12:17 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
