The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:17 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Randy Hoback, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Rodger Cuzner for Hon. Mark Eyking.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst; Frédéric Forge, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Association of Agri-Retailers: Ken Clancy, Chairman; David MacKay, Executive Director. Canadian Sheep Federation: Jennifer MacTavish, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study on the competitiveness of the Canadian agricultural sector.
 

David MacKay, Jennifer MacTavish and Ken Clancy made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Pierre Lemieux gave notice of the following motion:

That the Committee express its support for the abolishment of the long gun registry (Bill C-391, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (repeal of long gun registry)) because the long gun registry has created significant hardship for farmers and for the farming community; and that this be reported to the House.

 

Bev Shipley moved, — That the Committee study the future of farming with a particular focus on young farmers.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
