The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met by videoconference at 11:40 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Larry Miller, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, France Bonsant, Hon. Wayne Easter, Hon. Mark Eyking, Pierre Lemieux, Larry Miller, Blake Richards, Bev Shipley, Brian Storseth and Francis Valeriote.

 

Acting Members present: Josée Beaudin for André Bellavance and David Tilson for Randy Hoback.

 

Associate Members present: Malcolm Allen and Brian Jean.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Isabelle Duford, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Analyst; Mathieu Frigon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Prince Edward Island Cattle Producers: Cameron MacDonald, Past Chair; Brian Morrison, Director. Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture: Henry Vissers, Executive Director; David Oulton, Chair of the Nova Scotia Cattle Producers Association.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 24, 2009, the Committee resumed its study of the Situation of the Red Meat Sector.
 

A point of order was raised regarding the mandate of the Subcommittee on Food Safety.

 

Debate arose thereon.

 

On motion of Mark Eyking, it was agreed, — That witnesses be now heard.

 

The witnesses made opening statements.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That all questions be five (5) minutes.

 

The witnesses answered questions.

 

Mark Eyking took the Chair at 1:08 p.m.

 

At 1:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
