The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in camera at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 362 East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Rick Casson, Betty Hinton, Hon. Judi Longfield, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Gordon O'Connor, Gilles-A. Perron and Anthony Rota.

 

In attendance: As Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant. Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As an Individual: André Marin, Former Ombudsman for the Canadian Forces. Department of National Defence: Barbara Finlay, Interim Ombudsman, Office of the Ombudsman.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Auditor General be invited to appear in relation to her recent report on the Department of National Defence and the Command and Control Program.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 36(8)(b), the Committee commenced consideration of the failure of the Ministry to respond to petition Nos 381-0241 to 381-0244 concerning the National Missile Defence referred to the Committee on April 4, 2005.
 

It was agreed, — That the appropriate Minister be invited to appear in relation to the failure to respond to petitons within the required time period.

 

At 9:17 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:20 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in public.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session on the office of the Ombudsman.
 

Mr. Marin made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
